Naveah had gotten back into town a few days ago, and was still unused to the streets. She had been gone for three weeks on a trip to Tenochtitlan, Mexico for another historical dig. An old friend of hers had called to ask for her help as a historian and lover of all things archaeology, and she volunteered without a thought. She didn't have much to do in the town she lived in, besides go to school, and there weren't any classes for her to attend at the moment.
She had wanted to go shopping in the town, but somehow made a wrong turn and ended up on a street more focused on apartments and restaurants and... a coffee house that appealed to her. When she had been in Mexico, she strictly prohibited herself from coffee, to keep the caffeine from interfering with her studies, but now that she was back, she wanted it badly.
Walking by the Central Perk, she saw her reflection in the door and realized how different and foreign she looked. She was wearing a pair of slightly sand-dusted khaki cargo shorts that showed how dark her legs were from the sun. Her shirt was a black tank top with a skull and roses on it, something purchased at a concert, and she was just wearing black All Star Converse. It wasn't sexy or pretty or even flattering, but she looked out of place with her sun darkened skin and color highlighted hair and clothes full of sand and dirt. Sighing, she pushed into the shop and headed for the front counter to order a drink.
She hadn't been looking up at the time to see who was serving her, but she immediately recognized the voice. Surprised, she didn't want to look, in case it wasn't him. Hastening to pay, she gave him too much for the tip and rushed off. She just took her coffee and sat down at a table, trying to remember if that was really how he sounded as she flipped through a magazine... Soon, she needed a refill, and she raised her hand to call over a server, hoping that perhaps she was right.

Jaxon stood quietly behind the counter, watching coffee beans swirl around in the grinder, watching he other servers whip up frappes, tugging his apron, you name it. Life as a barista really wasnt all too entertaining. But it paid. Even if he did have to wear such a horribly hot pink apron with a matching visor. Luckily, he was allowed to wear whatever he wanted underneath it and had chosen a pair of tan cargo shorts that fell just below his knees, a plain white v-neck and a pair of gray Nike high tops.
Usually, he was lucky if he served maybe three people in one day. And seeing as hed just served his second, he was already starting to settle into 'Jaxon shut down' mode. However, just after removing his visor and running a hand back through his short curly hair, Jaxon blinked slowly, noticing his previous customer's hand wander into the air. He smiled at this for two reason: one, it meant hed get a tip. And two, well, she was hot.
"I got her," he told one of his coworkers as he exited from behind the counter and approached the girl with the long dark hair. "Whatcha got a regular mocha, right?" he asked as he squatted, smiling, and putting his hand oit so he could take her cup to refill it.

Naveah looked up at him nervously, and was surprised to find it truly was him. Just how she remembered him, except his eyes looked... a little older, as if he had grown wiser, seen more of the world. She blinked at him for a moment, looking first at his face, then his hand. What did he want? Oh, yeah... She was more flustered than she had been in a whole five years. Did he not recognize her? Was he just... ignoring her or something?
Picking up the cup, she handed it to him with a faint smile on her lips. She had her hand turned just right for her to see the scales she had tattooed on. The tattoo on her hand had been painful, but she loved it, because it reminded her of the first day they met. That was the most magical day of her life, even though they hadn't actually managed to give her dragon skin on her hands with amateur alchemy. A dark room, a bright white alchemy circle painted on the floor, grey dust on her hands, not a scale in sight... Her eyes closed tight, trying to imagine them there, when there's a kiss upon her lips. Soft, gentle, quiet and sweet... as if she were Sleeping Beauty. More kisses, this time with her eyes open, giving willingly with her in his lap, their fingers intertwined... It was the most beautiful memory of her first few kisses.

Jaxon smiled when she handed him the cup, lettig out a light giggle. He went to ask her again about what shed been drinking when he noticed her hand. "Whoa nice tat," he said, the smile even broader. "Reminds me of this girl I used to know back in high school," he added, looking at the girl with a sort of sad look on his face. But he shrugged, standing, and grasped the cup. "Mocha, yea? And free refills come with a cookie of your choice," he said with a silly British accent.

"Thanks..." Naveah frowned slightly. Why didn't he see that it was her, his old high-school pal? "It's funny, I got these tattooed because of you, Jax." She murmured, looking up at him with hope in her eyes. Did he miss her as much as she had missed her? Did he even care that they hadn't talked in years? She stood up to face him, hands at her sides, eyes open wide and face full of nervousness. "Don't you recognize me?"

Jaxon was thoroughly confused when the girl said his name. He looked at her, into her eyes, up and down, tryibg to remember. Then it hit him. That childish smile, the fragile hands, her cute little nose and those.. Those eyes.. "Oh my god Naveah, is that you?" he asked, a small smile crawling up the side of his lips as his face twitched (something it hadnt done in a long time). "Youre so.. Youre so grown up! What happened to the sweet little 15 year old? Who is this beautiful bombshell?" he asked, so excited that it was actually her.
Looking down at her hand again he smiled and let out a laugh. "Are those the scales yoi were imagining?" he asked her, keeping his head down but looking at her from the tops of his eyes. My had she changed...

The smile that broke out on Naveah's face was one of pure joy. She hadn't been so happy in years, just to see an old and very familiar face. She didn't know Jaxon was here, in the very town she had been living in for months. She didn't even know that Jaxon was alive until now - she just knew he had disappeared after he left Foxhurst, or at least, she couldn't find him when she graduated. "Yeah, it's me, Jax! I guess after you graduated I sort of had to grow up without you." She shrugged, holding out her arms and then letting her hands fall back to her sides lightly.
She wanted to hug him or at least hold his hand again, but she was sure that they were past that now. That was then, this was a very different time and place. When he called her a bombshell, she laughed and twirled once, just to show him how gorgeous she was now that she was all grown up - even though that was his opinion, and not hers. Her eyes were bright and happy, and she couldn't stop smiling now. It was really Jaxon!
She held up her hands and turned them so that he could see her wrists where the scales continued. "Yeah, they were exactly what I was imagining that night." She chuckled, examining her hands before looking back up to him. "I'm twenty years old now, Jax, not that little girl you met years ago. I can't believe how much time it's been since I last saw you..." Her eyes clouded over for a moment with a sadness that was nagging at her. "Why... why didn't you call? Or email?"

Jaxon bit his lip when she spun around, the memories of her spinning back in his dorm room under the lights flooding his brain. It had been so long..
"Im twenty four now," he said, believing it was a bit more of a wow factor than twenty. He was smiling and his hand was behind his head when she suddenly asked why he hadnt tried to contact her. The smile that was there fell slowly into a frown. "Well uh.. Its complicated," he said, avoiding eye contact. This was the first time in two years that hed thought about Heather. Should he tell her? Not here.. definitely not here. But.. should he tell her at all? Shaking the thought from his head Jaxon twitched again and looked back at her. "Ive had a rough past," was what he said, deciding against telling her anything else. "With dropping out of college, m parents abandoning me, trying to pay rent.. Its rough. And you know my REAL past."
"Yknow why dont you let me get that refill for you real quick.. Ill get fired if i just stand here and talk to pretty girls all day," he said after a moment and moved behind the counter.

Naveah nodded when he mentioned the rough time he had. She was rather lucky, the way things had panned out with her. She had a lot of sponsors over the year, which included paying for college and getting her jobs and occasionally even paying the rent for her dumpy apartment. She was kicking it easy, and here was Jax, still struggling a little. It made her heart sink a little to think that he had been having trouble while she was out having the time of her life. She didn't want to mention that to him, though, so she just nodded and smiled, glad to hear him again.
"Alright, a refill would be nice." She called after him, then stepped closer to the counter. She didn't want to let him out of her sight, for fear that he'd disappear again on her. It was tough finishing school without her best friend, and even harder knowing that he was the only friend she would really have for a while. Now a days, she did have a few acquaintances, but none of them were like Jax.
She stepped up to the counter as he was getting her drink and leaned against the laminate surface, her elbow against the bakery case and her chin rested on her fist. "When do you get off work, Jax?" She asked, mindlessly twirling a piece of hair with her free hand. "It'd be nice to have a coffee with you, without having you refill it."

"Bout five minutes actually," he said as he looked up at the clock, happy to see it was almost noon as he remembered that in Fridays, he got off at twelve. "Every time I fill a cup I get extra so.." he handed her the drink, "thanks." he smiled and began untying his apron which he hung on a hook at the side of a large fridge. As he went back around the counter, he slapped a coworker on the back and said, "look, Kevin, hot girl. Can you cover my five minutes?" The man nodded, a smile on his face, as Jaxon put out his hand for Naveah. "Come see my place," he said with a smile.

Naveah sipped her coffee, reveling in the taste. It was warm and not too sweet but not too bitter - just the way she liked it. She turned to Jaxon and grinned, on cloud nine already. "I haven't had coffee like this is almost a month. Can you believe that? I love coffee, and I had to stop drinking it for three weeks. I've missed it so much." She laughed, taking another sip and finishing the cup in less than a minute.
Taking Jaxon's hand, she laced their fingers like they had that first night so many years ago. His hand felt the same as always, albeit a little warmer, perhaps. "Your place?" She wondered for a moment what they were supposed to do. They just met up again - it was almost as if they were strangers, or just acquainted friends, instead of the best friends they were once. "What, have you drawn another alchemy circle for us?" she joked.

Jaxon smiled down at their hands as Naveah laced their fingers like they used to. He had missed that.. And in all honesty, he hadnt held anyones hand since. "Ha i havent drawn one but yknow ive got some white paint," he said laughing gently as he started towards the door, guiding her by the hand. Sure theyd been apart for five years but he still felt like they were best friends.

Naveah laughed as he pulled her along. "I'm sure we can whip up something quick, right? You draw the circle and I'll find us some spells." She joked, shaking her head at the two of them. They were already acting like kids again, after being together for only a few minutes. "I'm kidding, of course," she clarified, just in case he thought she was still some magic enthused girl. "I haven't done any of that kind of thing in years! Bones are kind of more my thing now, I'm a part time archaeologist - that's why I haven't had coffee in a while. I was in Mexico for a dig, and I try not to have caffeine while working, in case I get distracted."
As they walked out the door, she glanced up at him. He wasn't that much taller than her anymore, but he still had a few inches of height more. It was weird, how they just suddenly found each other, but she liked having someone in town that she knew. "I've been taking college classes lately. Say hello to your official town historian - I got my degree a few weeks ago." She was bursting with excitement just to tell someone; she thought it was something cool, to have an actual job title. "So you know I've been going crazy with classes and work and traveling. What have you been up to?"

Jaxon nodded, listening as she spoke about her achievements. "Hello," he offered sarcastically with a smile when she told him she was town historian. "Eh I havent been doing much. Not nearly as cool as that," he said as he lead her down an alley. "My building is just back here," he said so she wouldnt think he was lurring her into a creepy alley. "I tried collge for a little while but... I didnt know what i wanted to do. I still dont. I was doing a lot of boring gen eds and.. Well it got too boring. So i quit. My dad stopped talking to me when i was about twenty.. My mom still sends me a thinking of you card every year. Other than that im on my own. Luckily my apartments rent isnt so bad and the landlord is my bro so he lets me slide a little."
Jaxon felt really bad not telling her that the reason his dad had stopped talkig to him because hed been to jail. He felt bad not telling her that hed been to jail in the first place. He hoped she wouldnt become too interested in how different je was now; hopefully she wouldnt bring up how much more outgoing he was.
Within no time, thetwo of them were at the door to his building. "Im fourth floor," he said, opening the door.
